Today’s users aren’t accustomed to waiting. Nowadays, information, products and services are all available with the click of a button. This preference for instant gratification has emerged in nearly every industry, including application development.
Currently, business users and consumers are demanding applications that can be built and rolled out faster than ever. While a rapid development cycle may help address these requirements, it can also increase the potential for coding problems and other performance issues. This makes performance and load testing all the more essential to the app development process.
“I need it yesterday”: The rise of rapid app development
As Enterprise App Tech contributor Jim Casey pointed out, the days of mobile app development requiring months from project launch to completion are over. Especially in the wake of Gartner introducing the Rapid Mobile App Development approach, business users can now create a company application in a shorter window than ever before.
“The days of mobile app development requiring months from project launch to completion are over.”
“Instead of devoting months and hundreds of thousands of dollars to building an app, rapid mobile app development presents a codeless (in most cases) environment so simple that nearly anyone in the enterprise can throw an app together in just a few minutes,” Casey wrote.
Research shows that this strategy is a direct response to the needs of today’s users. A recent survey of business leaders found that although more than 50 percent of participants note it takes seven months to a year to complete an app development project, half believe this process takes far too long.
Forrester researchers also underlined the shift taking place in the mobile app development community. The top transitions occurring in the sector, according to Forrester, include increasing mobile competition, new opportunities emerging through hardware changes and decreasing instances of standalone apps.
Faster, yet perfect
While users are demanding that apps be developed faster than ever, they are also requiring them to be effective, efficient and error free at the time of launch. IT Business Edge contributor Carl Weinschenk noted that many applications play an increasingly critical role in different industries, and any performance issues could have considerably damaging effects. An app that helps manage and control safety at nuclear power plants, for example, must be “perfect from day one.”
This presents quite the challenge for the DevOps community, as development teams scramble to not only roll out apps quicker than ever, but ensure that they function as they should as well. This is where performance and load testing becomes such a valuable part of the process.
App testing: The key to rapid app development
So how can developers adhere to the rapid mobile app development strategy while still ensuring that the program doesn’t lack when it comes to performance? Utilizing performance and load testing solutions hold the key to success.
