As the platforms on which applications are deployed change, there’s an inevitable surge of innovation around the way apps are built and delivered. Everything from languages and tools to development methodologies are impacted. Typically, it’s the platform that leads the way. For example, the shift from mainframe to client/server and the PC spurred the shift from procedural tools and drove the popularity of visual user interfaces and object oriented programming. Both had been around for quite some time, but it was the widespread deployment of a new compute platform that was a catalyst for innovation and adoption.
Of course, the web, and Sun’s early assertion that the ‘network is the computer’, created a new generation of innovation in application development and deployment. It’s hard to remember the time when you had to compile a program in order to see it work, or not. The browser as an application container, dramatically richer user interfaces, more agile development methodologies and flexible new scripting languages such as PHP became staples in every development shop.
The emergence of the Cloud as a platform has once again disrupted the way applications are built and delivered, not only inspiring entrepreneurs who are building new tools and techniques, but even impacting the way we do business. While the web helped spawn the growth of the hosted, subscription software business; the Cloud is making On Demand and pay-per-use a common paradigm for many services, including those provided by SOASTA.
As one of our partners, we’re glad to see Rackspace take a leadership role in guiding companies as they ponder a move to the cloud. Once companies answer the question ‘which apps should I move to the cloud?’ they then need to figure out how to do it. Through their Cloud Tools site Rackspace is, as noted on the site, providing ‘a place for Rackspace to feature tools which help our customers do more with the cloud ‘. This site highlights, and even rates, products and services that can help companies make that shift. SOASTA is proud to be the cloud testing service featured by Rackspace to help deliver confidence in the performance and reliability of their customer’s applications.
