Creating an HTTPS Recording

In order to create an HTTPS Recording, please follow these steps:

  1. Make sure you have a SOASTA Conductor running on the machine with the network traffic you wish to record. Note: you are free to use this for recording unencrypted (HTTP) traffic. However, you may wish to see the topic, “Creating an HTTP Recording”.

  1. Use your browser to visit the SOASTA CloudTest Repository page. Highlight “Message Recordings” and click on the “new” icon in the upper left hand corner of the screen.

  1. You will be presented with the first step of the recording wizard. Select the desired SOASTA Conductor from the list and click on the “Next” button.
  1. In Step 2 of the Wizard you will be presented with information that relates to the selected SOASTA Conductor. Note that the “Status” should display “Connected”. If it does not, then it is likely that your Conductor has not been started. To start a Conductor, locate the directory where you installed  SOASTA Conductor and start the “SOASTA Conductor” application. Use the “Recording Name” and “Save to Folder” fields to change the default name and folder locations if desired.
  1. To record HTTPS traffic rather than HTTP traffic, please click on the “Enable HTTPS Recording” button. If you do not click on this button you will not be able to successfully record HTTPS traffic. Click on the “Record” button.

  1. You will then be presented with a screen that will display HTTP messages as they are recorded. The SOASTA Conductor should display a status of “Recording” (Windows users may need to right-click on the tray icon to see the status).
  1. You generate HTTPS traffic by bringing up a new browser window. As HTTPS traffic is generated, the Recording screen will display the recorded traffic.

  1. During your recording the status bar at the bottom of the Recording page displays information about the data being recorded. The values displayed are:
  • The elapsed recording time
  • The number of HTTP messages recorded
  • The amount of data recorded
  1. When you are done generating HTTP traffic, click on the “Halt” button in the lower left hand corner of the Recording screen. The message “Finalizing Recording” will display in the upper right hand corner of the screen and will then change to “Recording Finished”. The SOASTA Conductor status should display “Finished Recording”.
  2.       Note: Recording HTTPS traffic requires the use of a “proxy”. This is handled by SOASTA Conductor and does not require special setup. However, some browsers (i.e. Firefox) need to be completely shutdown and restarted in order for proxy settings to take effect.
