First Web Performance Certification for iPhone and iPad Applications Announced

SOASTA, The Leader in Cloud Testing, Extends Certification Offering to Mobile App Providers

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.,—August 26, 2010—SOASTA, the leader in cloud testing, today announced a Performance Certification Program for providers of mobile applications to certify that their apps have been tested for web scale, and meet or exceed industry benchmarks for performance at peak levels of user traffic. In 2010 $6.2 billion dollars will be spent at mobile app stores such as Apple’s iTunes, Android Market and BlackBerry App World, with many more applications available for free. In addition, Java provides application functionality to standard mobile phone users, while smart phones and tablets leverage server-based applications through web services and fully capable browsers.

This proliferation of network enabled mobile devices, particularly the iPhone and iPad, means that applications such as location-based services and news or shopping sites can easily be hit by millions of concurrent users. Companies must understand and account for this additional traffic in order to maintain and continually improve the user experience. Moreover, mobile device customers are often even more demanding than computer-based users.

“Tarsin’s Capsa platform is the engine driving Hallmark’s new mobile phone offering, Hallmark Mobile Greetings. Our ability to perform matters, to both Hallmark and their customers” said Rich Valiquette, VP of Production, Tarsin, Inc. “With SOASTA CloudTest we were able to isolate performance issues before the Valentines Day spike by simulating real world user activity and traffic. Performance certification gives us the confidence that our application will be reliable and perform as promised.”

Whether due to cost, complexity or lack of resources, the vast majority of web applications and sites have not been tested at normal user volumes, much less for unexpected spikes in traffic. With SOASTA’s Performance Certification it is no longer too expensive or complex to validate performance, and the certification program does so without imposing additional strain on internal resources.

“The only way to certify performance is by realistically simulating both expected and potential peak traffic while monitoring the impact,” said Tom Lounibos, CEO, SOASTA. “Our CloudTest Builder makes it easy to create tests that accurately reproduce the traffic from various types of devices, and the CloudTest Grid allows our Performance Engineers to quickly generate load representing millions of mobile users. Having tested mobile applications for Quicken Online, NPR’s iPad application and Netflix, we’ve gained the practical experience to add iPhone and iPad apps to our existing Certification Program.”

SOASTA Performance Certification starts at $2500 for testing up to 1000 concurrent mobile devices accessing an application or website. It’s designed as a turnkey process, from test creation to delivery of the certification report, minimizing disruption by eliminating any unnecessary impact on the existing environment. Certification leverages SOASTA’s Global Test Cloud to provide an affordable end-to-end analysis of a site’s performance as well as measure responsiveness at normal and peak usage levels. Certified sites receive a comprehensive report on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), with a focus on response times achieved at various user loads.
